This document represents an outline of ideas for achieving the goals set out in the Astro2020 Decadal Survey (https://astro2020.gsfc.nasa.gov/decadal-survey/). These ideas are provided as suggestions and are not meant to be prescriptive or exhaustive.
The document is structured as follows:
Section I: Executive Summary
Section II: Context and Motivation
Section III: High-Level Goals and Key Recommendations
Section IV: Implementing these Recommendations
We suggest that there should be two subcommittees formed from members of the community and beyond:
Committee A) "Astro2020 Implementation Committee"
Committee B) "Astro2020 Decadal Survey Long Term Roadmap Committee"
We propose that these committees should consist of roughly equal numbers of members drawn from each sub-discipline represented in the Astro2020 Decadal Survey.
The main goal of Committee A is to develop short-term plans for implementing specific recommendations from Astro2020 that are ready for action now or in the near future.
The main goal of Committee B is to develop long-term plans that would guide us toward achieving all of the goals of Astro2020 over time.
We propose that these two committees should work together with the goal of ensuring that their activities are complementary and synergistic.
In order for these committees to function effectively we propose that they should be independent and autonomous but still be accountable to the community as a whole.
We propose that each committee should meet regularly and publish reports on their progress at regular intervals.
We suggest that these committees should operate with full transparency and that all meetings and reports should be made public.
We also suggest that these committees should engage with other stakeholders such as funding agencies and government bodies in order to ensure that their work is aligned with broader strategic priorities.
It is important to note that this document is intended as a starting point for discussion and debate within the community and not as a definitive blueprint for action.
Finally we would like to thank all those who have contributed their time and expertise in preparing this document.
We hope that it will serve as a useful resource for guiding our collective efforts towards achieving the goals set out in Astro2020.
